Toughest Part of IELTS

Every student is different but over a decade of teaching students I have found that most students have 1 area they need work on. The 1 section of the IELTS exam students do the worst is the speaking section.

Knowing what the hardest part of the test is important. By knowing what will likely be the area you need the most work you can focus your time your troubled areas. This allows you to more effectively use your study time. Each student is different but I often tell students to spend most of their study time working on this 1 area.

There are a number of ways that you can study for IELTS. If you are getting a tutor I suggest you focus on the speaking parts with them. The reason for this is that if you have a native teacher this is where they will be the greatest use. Other things you can study on your own or with others. If you do not have a native teachers an experienced local teacher it is still going to be better to study this as well since it will be the best you can get.

It should not be a surprise that this is the hardest. The reading and writing you have opportunities to slow things down. You can go back and reread or rewrite. Listening you can ask them to repeat themselves but you want to limit this as it will hurt your score to do it often. Speaking you have to be able to have a mastery of the language. You have to know the words you need. You have to understand the grammar to put those words in order. You also have to do all of this very quickly. It is a culmination of all parts of a language and it is done quickly.

The other sections you can practice on your own.  Later I will write about how to practice if you do not have a teacher and how to practice these other areas. You should still take some time to study the other areas with a teacher but most of your time is spent working on your speaking.
